Our Curriculum

Moorlands Junior School is dedicated to providing its pupils with a rich, broad, and balanced curriculum that fully meets the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum for England, as well as the guidelines for teaching Religious Education. Since the introduction of the new National Curriculum in September 2014, we have embraced its framework, ensuring our pupils access the essential knowledge, skills, and understanding across both core and non-core subjects. These subjects include English, mathematics, art, music, physical education (PE), computing, history, geography, science, design and technology (DT), modern foreign languages (MFL), and personal, social, health, and economic education (PSHE). You can view the framework by clicking on the following link: National Curriculum 2014.

Importantly, our curriculum never stands still, which we feel is increasingly vital in the ever-changing, fast-paced world we live in today. Our offer is continuously evolving and adapting; every decision about our curriculum is approached with the principle of prioritising what is best for the children, while actively rejecting the justification of doing things simply because they have always been done that way. This ignites curiosity and wonder in our wonderful children, who are inspired to learn, achieve, and grow—one of our core school values.

Our curriculum is firmly rooted in the Trafford LA Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education and SACRE guidelines, ensuring that our Religious Education (RE) content is both comprehensive and reflective of our diverse community. RE at Moorlands is taught through the JIGSAW RE comprehensive programme of learning, covering principal world religions and worldviews, using an enquiry approach. Jigsaw RE enables children to develop critical thinking skills, encourage their motivation to learn, as well as their knowledge and understanding of, and empathy with people and their worldviews (religious or otherwise). The JIGSAW RE approach takes very seriously the philosophy that children are free to make their own choices and decisions concerning their own view of the world and their beliefs and morals. RE does not try to persuade, but rather to inform and develop the skills with which evaluation can take place. The RE curriculum at Moorlands is further enhanced by visits to or visitors from places of worship and the respectful handling of replica artefacts and resources.

In addition to the National Curriculum, Moorlands Junior School offers a wide range of visits and extracurricular opportunities, enriched by activities in music, sport, and the arts. Our programmes are designed to embrace technology, equipping our pupils with the digital literacy and critical thinking skills necessary to navigate and thrive in an increasingly digital world.

We are committed to inclusivity and make provisions for children with special educational needs or disabilities, ensuring every pupil has the opportunity to flourish. Our curriculum is designed to encourage children to be keen, enthusiastic, and independent learners. Through various collaborative projects, we offer ample opportunities for pupils to develop their interpersonal skills by working and cooperating with others.

Our weekly Achieve and Enrichment afternoons, affectionately known as A&E by the children, are a distinctive feature of our curriculum and a particular source of pride for our school community. These sessions allow pupils to engage in creative, STEM, sporting, or mindfulness activities in mixed-age groups, building their self-esteem, self-confidence, and sense of expertise.

As pupils progress through Moorlands Junior School, we strive to equip them with the confidence and skills needed to become expert learners and leaders, ready to face future challenges with resilience and enthusiasm. Our curriculum not only prepares pupils academically but also supports their holistic development as well-rounded individuals.
