Welcome to Year 5 at Moorlands Junior School! This year is all about growing in confidence, building independence and challenging ourselves through exciting learning opportunities. We encourage our pupils to take pride in their progress, work collaboratively and embrace new experiences both in and out of the classroom.

Topics

Year 5 is packed with inspiring topics that help us explore the world around us and stretch our thinking. In science, we’ll be discovering the mysteries of space, learning about the solar system, gravity and beyond. In history, we’ll delve into the fascinating world of the Ancient Maya, uncovering what made their civilisation so unique. We’ll also enjoy weekly swimming lessons right here in our very own school pool, helping everyone to grow in confidence and water safety skills. Each topic brings a mix of practical learning, creativity and discovery.

Trips

One of the most exciting events in Year 5 is our residential trip, where we stay overnight and take part in outdoor activities like climbing, team-building and trying new challenges. It’s a highlight of the year and a brilliant chance to grow in independence and make special memories with friends.

Top Tips

English: Use ambitious vocabulary and check your punctuation carefully to make your writing shine!
Maths: Practise your times tables every day – they’re really useful when working with fractions and division.

Homework

Homework in Year 5 is a mix of paper-based and online activities. These tasks are optional and designed to support your child’s learning at home.
In addition to these, we also set:

• Weekly spellings on Ed Shed

• Times tables practice on Times Tables Rockstars

• Daily reading to build fluency and foster a love of books

Communication

We use Class Dojo to share class updates and communicate with families. You can send messages directly to the teacher and see photos, announcements and celebrations from our learning each week.
